What To Expect

With its rather rough, round exterior, this old fortress is an easily recognizable monument. Though imposing, it often falls under the shadow of the magnificent St Peter’s Basilica and the Vatican Museums hiding within the walls of the Vatican City. Would you believe that this castle and the Vatican share a connection? Not just through history but also by a secret tunnel! In fact, Castel Sant’Angelo Tickets open doors to a lesser-known side of the Vatican.

The castle was originally built to be a mausoleum for the powerful emperor Hadrian. Later, however, it was converted into a fortress used as a sanctuary for the popes. Today, the fortress houses the Museo Nazionale di Castel Sant'Angelo (Castel Sant'Angelo National Museum) and featuring a varied collection of sculptures, paintings, military memorabilia and even medieval firearms. A short walking distance from the Vatican, Castel Sant’Angelo is not short on surprises. [readmore]

As for the Castel Sant’Angelo (Castle of Holy Angel), its history couldn’t be more exciting. Commissioned by the emperor Hadrian, the structure’s first function was to be a family mausoleum. Later, during the construction of the Aurelian Walls, Hadrian’s mausoleum was fortified and became part of the defensive city wall.

From that point, the building slowly transformed into a fortress. Its name though, originated in the 6th century. It was when the Vatican renamed the castle and turned it into a papal fortress. Why? Thanks to an angelic vision of Pope Gregory the Great.

Angelic Vision

Pope Gregory had the vision while crossing the bridge of Hadrian with the penitents’ procession on the way to the St. Peter’s Basilica. The procession was a plea and a prayer to end the plague that was seizing Rome. The pope and other participants saw the vision of Archangel Michael standing on top of the Mausoleum, wiping his flaming sword and returning it to the sheath. Gregory interpreted it as a sign that the plague was about to end. And it did!

Secret Corridor

The secret corridor connecting the castle with the Vatican is famous as Passetto di Borgo. Perhaps the most famous story associated with it is that of Pope Clement VII and his Swiss Guards. They used it to hide from the army of Charles de Bourbon during the sack of Rome in the first half of the 16th century.

Through Rome is filled with more famous attractions and people hurry to book the Roman Forum and Colosseum tickets or visit the Capitoline museums, this peculiar fortress is worthwhile. Plus there has never been a better deal on Castel Sant'Angelo ticket with audio guide as this one! A booked ticket you won’t regret.
