Uffizi Gallery History
The origin of the Galleria Degli Uffizi stretches all the way to the time of the Republic of Florence. The first Grand Duke of Tuscany, Cosimo I de Medici, decided to build the palace to create office spaces for Florentine magistrates, merchants, judges. The works began in 1560 and took exactly 20 years to complete. Though the whole thing was Cosimo’s idea, he didn’t live to see it complete. It was his son, Francesco I de’ Medici, who saw the project through. He entrusted the construction to a skilled artist and architect, Buontalenti.
The Birth of the Collection
Since Palazzo degli Uffizi was so generous in space, Francesco decided to turn the rooftop loggia into a personal gallery. It featured his collection of 15th-century paintings as well as precious stones, jewelry, statues, bronzes, cameos, miniatures, instruments of science, and even natural rarities. So, when the Uffizi needed a new extension, Buontalenti kept this new leisurely function in mind and added a theatre and tribune to the structure.
The Hall of Maps (Medici’s map collection of their domains in Florence, Siena, and Elba) and the Mathematics Room (featuring innovative scientific instruments) joined the party between the 16th and 17th century. Still, it wasn’t until the year 1769 when the gallery officially opened to the public.
