After marvelling at the enormity of St. Mark’s Square (declared the “finest drawing room in all of Europe” by Napoleon), we’ll be granted special access to St. Mark’s Basilica, which will by this time have closed its doors to the general public for the night.
Once inside, you’ll have the chance to explore the hushed, deserted interior, allowing you direct, unobstructed and up-close views of those famous glass-and-gold mosaics as they shine in the evening light.[readmore]Your guide will show you around, explaining the significance of the east-meets-west design elements, which reflect Venice’s role as a crossroads in the Mediterranean and beyond. During your visit a custodian will also unlock special access areas that the daytime crowds make difficult to visit, such as the crypt which is said to hold the bones of St. Mark himself and the dazzling Pala d’ Oro, a gem-laden Byzantine altarpiece with over 1,900 precious stones.
