It’s no secret that Florence has quite an eventful history. In fact, it has it all: war, art, science, wealth, romance, simplicity, intrigues, politics, and great wine and food!
Where did it all start? The recognized origin story tells that it was Julius Caesar who established Florentia sometime around 59 BC. It was to be a refuge for retired soldiers while also serving as a strategic garrison controlling the narrowest crossing on the Arno river.
