Let Cassia, the ancient Roman road, lead you to the renowned vineyard hills of Montalcino. The journey commences at a small yet distinctive winery where we can stroll through vineyards, delve into the cellars and appreciate an initial tasting of the well-known Brunello wine.
Later, we arrive at Montalcino, the town in the hills from where the region and its wines get their name from. Here, you are free to climb the fortress walls where the Republic of Siena’s courageous soldiers made their last stand against the Medici and Florence. [readmore] Leisurely peruse the town’s shops, sample the Brunello wines in one of many wine bars or simply meander amongst the city walls and soak in the breathtaking views of the vineyards and valleys below.
After spending time in the town of Montalcino, stopover at the spectacular Benedictine abbey of Sant’Antimo. Woven in ancient mystery and set in a fantastical landscape, experience the pastoral serenity and peace which is certainly one of the highlights of Tuscany.
Listening to the monks sing Gregorian chants while basking in the abbey’s natural beauty. We visit a family-run winery where we meet the owners and winemakers. We explore the farm before sitting and feasting on traditional Tuscan cuisine paired with delicious home-grown wine.
At times the farm does become unavailable and if this does occur, we will still enjoy a traditional Tuscan meal but dine at a typical and distinctive trattoria. That afternoon, at our third winery, we attend a presentation where the wine-making processes are comprehensively described, and we find out about the various tools used, how the vines are maintained and how long legislation demands that wine must age in oak barrels.
Thereafter, we become acquainted with the winemakers while sipping on heavenly wine. There are 230 wineries in this region but we usually only visit small and medium-sized ones because we appreciate rare, artisanal individualistic wine which often results in fuller more complex tones, rather than large-scale wineries.
