Meet your guide at the bottom of the Campidoglio staircase, also called Cordonata Capitolina and start your tour by admiring the incredible namesake square, designed by the great Michelangelo. The Campidoglio was once the most important religious building, dedicated to the three main pagan Gods: Jupiter, Juno, and Minerva. In the Middle Ages it became the headquarter of the civil power, a role that it still maintains today as office of the city Municipality.
You will then proceed and get to observe the majestic Roman Forum and the Palatine Hill lit up for the night.[readmore]Even if it is closed at this time, you will still get to marvel at the amazing view of what was once the center of social, religious and political activities of the city. While walking down the hill, marvel at the spectacular Forum of Caesar, where lie the ruins of the temple of Venus and even admire the Forum of Augustus, built by the first Roman Emperor, right on the other side of the road.
Your guide will then lead you through Via dei Fori Imperiali, a piece of modern Italian history: the dictator Benito Mussolini had an entire neighborhood demolished in the 1920s to realise it as to remember the Roman Empire and its symbology, which fascism took its inspiration from. The road connects Piazza Venezia to the Colosseum. One last stop before arriving at the Colosseum: the Temple of Peace, a fascinating forum built by Emperor Vespasian with the loot of the Jewish–Roman war.
Last, but definitely not least, the Colosseum awaits! Prepare to remain speechless while descending towards the Undergrounds and admiring its narrow corridors, tunnels and complex mechanisms at the evocative light of the moon. You will also have the rare opportunity to enjoy it virtually empty, with your group and a licensed, English-speaking guide.
Take the chance to wander around while listening to the thorough explanation (75 minutes approx.) about the incredible history of Rome and this monument. Still not tired? The night is just beginning! The eternal city awaits you with its infinite surprises.
