Treat yourself to a day out in two beautiful cathedral towns that host annual Christmas markets, combining seasonal cheer with history and culture.
First, we visit Salisbury Cathedral and admire this magnificent building dressed for the festive season. According to local legend, an archer shot an arrow from the old settlement at Old Sarum, and it struck a deer; where the deer later fell became the site of New Sarum, now Salisbury. The Cathedral is notably built over a river, and you can explore the beautifully restored Chapter House and view the historic Magna Carta of 1215, one of the world’s most important legal documents. After visiting the Cathedral, you will have time to wander the nearby Guildhall area and browse the Christmas market stalls, with opportunities to sample seasonal food and find unique gifts.
In the afternoon, we travel on to Winchester, once the capital of Anglo-Saxon England. We pause at the statue of King Alfred the Great, and the markets are set in the atmospheric precincts of Winchester Cathedral. Take time to enjoy the festive stalls, explore the Cathedral interior and, if you wish, visit the medieval Great Hall.
As daylight fades and the Christmas lights glow, we return together to London, carrying memories, gifts and seasonal treats from two of England’s most charming cathedral towns.
