Whale watching and puffin watching from Reykjavík are two of the most popular pastimes for tourists visiting the Icelandic capital, so why not combine them both in the space of one tour?
The tour starts from Reykjavík Harbour, where you will board the Skúlaskeið (‘Old Skúli’) to set off into the Faxaflói Bay. This boat is perfect for puffin watching, as it can get close to the rocky shores where the puffins live, while it is also large, so makes it suitable for whale watching in deeper waters.
The puffins make their homes on the small islands of Lundey and Akurey, which are reachable in around 15 minutes by boat from Reykjavík Harbour. From there, you will sail further out to sea where you have a chance of seeing minke whales, humpback whales, white beaked dolphins and harbour porpoises, among other species of marine life.
The boat has a heated indoor area, as well as an outdoor area, a cafe, restrooms, and thermal overalls (including in children’s sizes), meaning the tour can go on year-round.
